Creative activities for young people, particularly those who are at risk of exclusion or offending.

Artlink is currently providing music workshops in four Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) in Suffolk – the Albany Centre in Bury St Edmunds, Alderwood in Ipswich, Mill Meadow near Newmarket and Hampden House in Sudbury.

Young people who have been excluded from school are offered African Drumming, DJ-ing, acoustic and electric guitar and percussion.

Group music making contributes to the personal and social development of the participants. It therefore helps the PRU’s in their aim of re-integrating the young people back into mainstream education. In partnership with the PRU’s and Connexions, Artlink is attempting to measure the distance travelled by the young people by using the concept of Resilience as a bench mark.

After several years of working in partnership with Whitton Life in Lowesoft, a recent Junk Funk wheelie bin drumming project with very challenging young people attending Positive Futures also in Lowestoft started well. However it failed at the last hurdle when most of the young people declined for a variety of reasons to take part in performances at the Latitude Festival in July. JUST 42 kindly “stepped into the breach” at the last moment with their established Bin There Drummed That wheelie bin band which was a great success.

In October and November 2008 Artlink will be recruiting for a new Junk Funk band in Eye. The main programme will begin in the New Year and leading on to performances, hopefully including rock bands and digital media, at Eye Castle in Summer 2009.

In addition to the wheelie bin drumming, Artlink can offer a wide range of workshops – music, digital media, DJ-ing, circus skills, clowning, theatre and dance – all delivered by professional practicing artists.

Artlink would like to here from potential partners who can help us to reach young people who would not normally have access to creative activities.
