This month we’d like to introduce you to Lewis, film-maker extraordinaire, who can regularly be found helping our students to bring their thoughts, ideas and creative inspiration into flickering, shimmering, technicolour life through moving image.
Name: Lewis Wickwar
Can you tell us a little bit about your own practice?
I’m a filmmaker and freelance arts worker. Over the years I’ve made films with people of all ages and abilities. I work as collaboratively and informally as possible, using equipment that is accessible and tactile. The film industry is a competitive place so I offer an opportunity for beginners to explore the medium in a freer, less pressured environment where there’s room for trial and error.
I encourage people to mix film, animation and special effects techniques to express themselves and enjoy seeing what weird and wonderful results they can come up with.
What’s been your favourite artistic experience of the past 12 months?
Working with the three Suffolk Artlink JumpstART! groups last year was really inspirational. Each group approached making their films in similar ways but the results varied wildly and were hugely entertaining. They had already written original songs and produced beautiful props when I started filming with them and it was a real pleasure looking at how we could best incorporate all their ideas into the finished films. I think we managed to use every film technique in the manual and may have even made up some new ones!
You can take a look at the finished JumpstART! videos here.
Which Suffolk Artlink projects have you worked on to date?
How has working with Suffolk Artlink influenced your work?
I often work behind the scenes on projects so it’s always nice to focus purely on being creative! The team at Suffolk Artlink have offered me some great opportunities to develop my film work and I’ve been able to expand on the types of activity I can offer as a result.
How would you describe Suffolk Artlink in 3 words?
Genuine, committed, exuberant
