This month we’re joined by experienced arts project manager, Siobhan Johnson. She takes the helm of our longest running project, Clown Round. With Siobhan on the team, we’re confident that Drs Daydream, Misschief, Buffle and Fidget are in good hands!
What were you doing before you joined Suffolk Artlink?
I was working for SeaChange Arts, an arts charity based in Great Yarmouth, as their Education and Participation Co-ordinator. The organisation’s main area of work is Circus and they run a creation and education centre called the Drill House. SeaChange Arts also produce the Out There Festival. I looked after the Drillaz Circus School as well as managing many community and participatory projects in a range of art forms.
Which Suffolk Artlink project will you be looking after?
I will be managing Clown Round, the project that takes our wonderful team of Clown Doctors to visit children and their families in hospitals and hospices across the region.
What are you most looking forward to in your new role?
The thing I’m most excited about is getting to be a small part of the wonderful work the Clown Doctors do! To be able to bring some fun and laughter to the children and their families, at the most difficult of times, is a real privilege and I’m looking forward to being able to support this fantastic work. And, of course, having a few laughs myself with the Clown Doctors along the way!
What’s been your favourite artistic experience of the past 12 months?
I’ve been incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to experience some fantastic performances and be part of some amazing projects, so it is very difficult to pick just one. I think my favourite from the last year was seeing life-size Elephant puppets walking through the streets of Great Yarmouth as part of the Great Yarmouth Arts Festival Carnival Parade. These were created by Ali Mackenzie and the artists at TinHouse and formed part of a project to celebrate the 250 years of Circus. They were incredible; it was definitely a sight you don’t see every day!
How do you enjoy spending your time when you are not at work?
As well as spending time with friends and family, I like to get outside and go for walks, and spend time in my garden. I like to eat too! I also enjoy going to new places to explore, to learn about the culture, the history, and the food.
