Professional photographer Jemma Watts made her debut at our Around the Table project last year – and what a talented lady! Having previously worked for Jamie Magazine, Real Homes and House Beautiful she brought a whole new angle to our project exploring food, creativity and culture. And who doesn’t want a loaf of bread with their portrait on it??!
Name: Jemma Watts
Can you tell us a little bit about your own practice?
I’ve been working as a professional photographer for the past 17 years. I was living and working in London until 4 years ago, when I made the move to Suffolk. I photograph food, interiors and people. I’ve photographed many cookbooks, and shot for magazines including Jamie Magazine, Real Homes and House Beautiful. I also work for design agencies for brands and marketing projects.
My style is very much about telling a story which means I am often able to bring my three areas of photography interest to the same project, such as producing a story about the food, the people and the place.
What’s been your favourite creative experience of the past 12 months?
I had the pleasure of joining Pinney’s of Orford for a few days and experienced the whole process of oyster farming and smoking fish! It was such fun to go out on the fishing boats onto the river, photographing the fishermen pulling in the nets and crates, then going into the smokehouse to capture the whole fish smoking process. I smelt like I’d been smoked afterwards though!
Which Suffolk Artlink projects have you worked on to date?
I’ve been involved several sessions for ‘Around the Table’. I worked alongside cook, Lindsey Wright, where she led the cooking exercises and I then taught the group how to photograph what they had produced.
How has working with Suffolk Artlink influenced your work?
I’ve loved the whole teaching experience, to see the sense of achievement felt by everyone in the group. I’m now keen to run more workshops.
How would you describe Suffolk Artlink in 3 words?
Inspiring, fun, giving.
