Following our amazing visit to Lowestoft Record Office last week, we spent this week’s session creating some Special Delivery News headlines.

One child related her experience of looking for her street on an old map, only to find open fields, whilst another was impressed by the diversity of shops in the High Street – and the trams.

The children researched stories about a local church, the arrival of the railway in Lowestoft and the plight of a particular trawler – the Albacore.

They searched through back issues of the Lowestoft Journal and filing cabinets of photographs, as well as studying aged maps and pictures of Old Lowestoft and were amazed to discover how much had changed – from the local landscape to the social etiquette that required women to use bathing machines to enter the sea.

As a member of the Record Office staff later commented, ‘It was wonderful to see young minds soaking up historic knowledge’.
