Brave Art spring and summer 2023

We have completed our ten-week Brave Art spring term course in Illustration and Design. Students in Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft and Ipswich worked with artists to create drawings, word art, paintings and printmaking on the themes of wellbeing, nature and people.

‘I’m learning that if I keep trying, I can do whatever I put my mind to. I never thought I could do an illustration like that; it’s really surprised me!’ J, BSE student.

For summer 2023 we are making big changes to our programme, with each of our three locations taking a different approach to better reflect people and place.

Brave Art at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich

Brave Art has an exciting residency planned at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich.

Christchurch Mansion’s exhibition starting in May is called ‘Animals in the Art Gallery’, exploring British wildlife alongside artistic depictions of animals from the Middle Ages to the present day. Animals from Ipswich Museum’s natural history collection will be in the gallery, alongside artworks that reflect different habitats from woodland to coastal, gardens to urban.

We’ll be working with artists Emma Withers and Claudia Boese to explore the gallery and park, and make animal and nature themed work.

This term will run for 10 weeks from Wednesday 17 May – Wednesday 26 July, 10 am – 3pm.

Brave Art Bury St Edmunds

This term will be a mixed media studio project run by artists Alice Stallard and Emma Skeet. We’ll be exploring new materials and techniques, from still life to urban sketching as well as visiting Moyses Hall to explore the contemporary art exhibition ‘The Urban Frame: Mutiny in Colour’, featuring over 100 works from artists including Banksy, Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin.

The summer term in Bury St Edmunds will run from Tuesday 25 April – Tuesday 4th July, 10 am – 3pm at the Bury St Edmunds Football Club, Ram Meadow.

Brave Art Lowestoft

Our talented and creative Brave Artists have been commissioned by First light Festival to paint and stitch two large canvasses depicting the stories of The Spirit of the Sea and Farrah the Fox.  The work will be exhibited in shop windows for the duration of the First Light Festival. Look out for them on display at the Salvation Army Charity shop in London Road South.

We will also be making sea themed props and costumes for our participation in the public parade on Saturday 17th June – and helping towards making the large postcard which will feature in the procession!

Brave Artists will be running a workshop in the Cosmic Pirate tent at 3pm on Saturday, 17th June 2023, where visitors will be invited to make friendly sea creatures to keep or give away to friends and family. Please pop in and say hello to us and join in.

Lowestoft Brave Art Summer Term Thursday 20 April – Thursday 22 June, 10 am – 3pm at Kirkley Centre, London Road South
